UEFA seems set to introduce goalline technology at Euro 2016 as well as at Champions League and Europa League games from next season onward, the general secretary of Europe's ruling football body, Gianni Infantino, said Friday. Infantino spoke of "a positive feeling" on the issue within the decision-making executive committee, and a decision is to be made at its next meeting in late January. "If we decide on goalline technology in addition to the five referees it will be for Euro and club competitions," Infantino told a news conference. Infantino said practical aspects such as choosing a technology partner and installing the necessary cameras in many stadiums need to be finalized. The Champions League and Europa League group stage features 80 teams, of which so far only clubs from big leagues such as England, Germany and Spain have the technology in place. The world governing body FIFA gave the nod to goalline technology two years ago, and it was used at the 2014 World Cup. UEFA up to now relied on its goalline referees in addition to the regular three match officials at its events. | |||||
